Harmonizing Differences: Cultivating Cultural Intelligence in Higher Education’s Global Workforce
Presenter: Moby Onuoha, McMaster University
As higher education institutions worldwide become more diverse, understanding how cultural backgrounds influence workplace behaviors is critical to leading effectively. This session focuses on how cultural intelligence can empower leaders to navigate and manage an increasingly global workforce, offering insights into how the country of origin shapes behaviors, communication styles, and team dynamics within higher education environments.
At the heart of this session is Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions, which provide a framework for interpreting how cultural differences influence workplace dynamics. From Power Distance to Indulgence vs. Restraint, we will explore how leaders can apply these dimensions to understand and manage the diversity within their staff, whether they're from North America, Asia, Europe, Africa, or other regions.
This session goes beyond recognizing these differences; it emphasizes the importance of actively engaging with people through informed, empathetic leadership. We’ll discuss strategies for leveraging cultural differences to enhance communication, improve teamwork, and foster inclusivity in a multicultural workforce.
Through real-world case studies and personal stories, we will demonstrate the practical application of cultural dimensions in managing staff from various countries and cultural backgrounds. These examples illustrate how cultural intelligence helps resolve everyday challenges and more complex organizational issues.
This session is valuable for higher education leaders, HR professionals, managers, and administrators in global or multicultural environments. Attendees will gain cultural insights and practical strategies to help them effectively manage diverse teams and create inclusive workplaces, regardless of their team members’ country of origin.
